Electric mobility represents the most immediate future of the motor world. In a few years, electric cars will be our daily bread. models like the Mercedes EQC they will be common on our roads, but for the moment the industry has only taken its first steps in the market. The future is yet to come.

However, positioning yourself well is paramount for brands. Whoever gets there first hits twice. While some brands have opted for electric for a long time, Tesla, Renault o Nissan, others have just launched their first truly functional models on the market. The EQC is the first 100% electric model from Mercedes to land on the panorama. A large SUV that anticipates what is to come.

The EQC format may not be the best of all at a time when electrical technology still has a lot to improve. For now weight and large size are enemies of autonomy, and with a charging network that is too short, every kilometer is gold. However, as a product of Mercedes, the EQC stands out in many aspects such as comfort, equipment and quality. Despite its qualities, in May 2023 the electric SUV disappears from the catalog of Mercedes without leaving a successor.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes EQC

Test Mercedes EQC profile

The rush has forced Mercedes engineers to be creative in developing the EQC. To avoid excessively dilating the creation time, the electric SUV boasts the platform of the Mercedes GLC, although with certain alterations in order to be able to cope with the new electrical configuration. In the future, electric models from Mercedes will use a specific platform for them.

The measurements of the Mercedes EQC take us to the D-SUV segment. 4,76 meters long, 1,88 meters wide and 1,62 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a weight of 2.485 kilograms, and a wheelbase of 2,87 meters that translate into good interior roominess for a maximum of five passengers. The EQC is located midway between the GLC and the Mercedes GLE.

Unlike other electric cars on the market, the EQC only has a trunk, located in the back. Its electric opening gate discovers a trunk with a minimum capacity of 500 liters. A figure that can be increased to 1.460 liters if we lower the second row of seats. These figures are slightly lower than those of a GLC due to the presence of an electric motor on the rear axle.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes EQC

Mercedes-Benz EQC

As we have already said, the Mercedes EQC is a 100% electric model. From the beginning of its development it has been conceived not to include combustion versions, and it has. For now it only has one available unit, the so-called EQC 400 4MATIC. A unit with two electric motors managed by an automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive scheme.

Given the weight of the set, the EQC needs two electric motorss to move, one on the front axle and one on the rear. Both are powered by liquid cooled lithium ion battery located on the floor of the passenger compartment. It has a 80 kWh usable capacity. The maximum power of the set is 408 horsepower with a torque of 760 Nm. These figures may vary depending on the driving mode and whether the EQC is using one or two electric motors.

Different driving modes manage a complex technological development. Despite the high efficiency of the electrical equipment the homologated combined consumption is 22,4 kWh/100 kilometers, which in turn translates into a autonomy of 416 kilometers. The performance is worthy of a lighter car: from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5,1 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.

Equipment of the Mercedes EQC

Inside Mercedes-Benz EQC test

The electric ones are conceived as models of advanced technology. Mercedes has worked hard on the auxiliary electrical systems to simplify driving the EQC. An arduous job that helps the driver invaluable and that allows to squeeze more autonomy from the batteries. In addition to that, the electric SUV has all the innate qualities of a product from the Bavarian firm; good materials and great finishing process.

As in the mechanical section, the Mercedes EQC does not have a range of finishes as such. The closest thing you have are the exterior and interior AMG Line packages. Thanks to them we can slightly change the appearance of the vehicle with a slightly sportier touch thanks to bumpers and exclusive details. The equipment as such does not vary, and much of it can be found in the list of options.

As far as equipment is concerned, the EQC honors the electric concept and the premium character of Mercedes. It has a wide range of elements that focus on making life on board more comfortable and safe. It is worth noting the presence of LED matrix headlights, digital instrument panel, sunroof, keyless entry and start, virtual reality browser, voice control, three-zone climate control, 360º camera, electric and heated seats, and of course a complete team of assistants and driving aids.

The Mercedes EQC according to Euro NCAP

Mercedes is one of the reference brands when it comes to talking about safety. Their cars are usually considered one of the safest on the market. The case of the EQC is not strange. Euro NCAP has tested the electric SUV and has determined the five stars assessment for him. Outstanding have been the results obtained in protection of adult and child passengers with a rating of 96 and 90 out of 100 respectively. Good marks also for the sections on pedestrian vulnerability and operation of driving assistants, 75 out of 100 in both cases.

The Mercedes EQC of Km 0 and second hand

At the moment the electric market has not grown in all its splendor. The day will come when it does, and that will bring with it a more prosperous used and second-hand market in terms of units. The Mercedes EQC is a new model, and still not enough time has passed for secondary sales channels to grow. The few units that exist barely have a few thousand kilometers.

Something similar happens in the Km 0 market. Being a model with such a low print run, dealers do not accumulate in stock. The commercial outlet is scarce and therefore the brand new second-hand units are reduced.. There are only a handful of units for sale, and their prices do not represent a great benefit compared to factory units. In the best of cases, we are talking about amounts close to 82.000 euros.

Mercedes EQC rivals

The electric market is growing like wildfire. Sales are still minor, but it is clear that brands want to be the first to position themselves for an emerging market. The number of models continues to grow, although not many are directed to the segment in which the Mercedes EQC is. Premium electric E-SUVs still don't have many players. Audi e-tron, Jaguar I PACE y Tesla Model Y They are the most powerful rivals that the German must face. In the future, more models will be added, such as the BMW iX3.

Price of the Mercedes EQC

Electric technology is still far from being accessible to all pockets, the day will come when an average customer can access an electric easily, but neither the size nor the character of the EQC are aimed at him. We are talking about an expensive model, in the cheapest of cases the Mercedes EQC has a starting price of 85.375 euros. That amount can easily rise if we opt for one of the many optional elements that the large electric SUV can have.
