3/14 is not the famous number Pi, although it may seem like it, nor is it a fraction or anything to do with the world of mathematics. These are the overtaking figures that there were last year at the beginning of the 1 F2018 season and those that have occurred this year in that same race in F1 2019. The Australian GP has been valid to see if the new spoilers are effective to encourage overtaking.
The new front wings were intended to simplify all the complex aerodynamic elements of the past to leave wings that are wider, but more limited in terms of vortex generation. Thus, when a car approaches the one in front and takes the slipstream, dirty air or wake that the car in front leaves does not affect the downforce of the car behind as much and it can get closer in the most twisty areas, since until now you could only approach on the straights and you had to move away a little in the corners if you did not want lose charge and end up outside.
Well, judging that last year there were 3 overtaking in the race and this year there have been 14, that means that they have multiplied almost x5. A significant amount of overtaking makes it clear that F1 can be optimistic and expect good things in the coming races with this new technical regulation. It is true that Australia is a particular place, and it is not easy to overtake as in the Monaco GP, but that makes it more indicative of what this new aerodynamics could affect in future events where it is easier to overtake.
Already in preseason we saw how the comments of certain pilots already indicated that it was easier to approach the car in front and overtaking, but until we saw it for real in the race we couldn't judge. Yes it is true, that as I already commented in the race summary, I personally expected a little more. But, I repeat, it is a particular circuit and maybe I will have to keep quiet in future appointments.
