SUVs don't seem to have any limits, and we're not just referring to their off-road capabilities. Such is the commercial fashion that weighs on them that today we can see them in all sizes, formats and brands. The BMW X7 It has been the last member to join the popular German crossover family, although in reality it will not be the last, since the BMW X8 will soon see the light.

But focusing on the X7, it must be said that it is the top of the range of the German firm, an honor that it shares with the lofty BMW Serie 7. Initially BMW he did not intend to create it, but he changed his mentality when he saw the success of rival models. That doubt between whether to produce it or not causes the X7 is the most recent model in the category, officially presented at the end of 2018, although a year earlier they had already launched the original idea with a prototype called X7 iPerformance.

Since then the BMW X7 has positioned itself as one of the best in its category, improving its condition in 2022, at which time a prominent facelift is introduced, being the first model of the house to offer the new design livery. Luxurious, comfortable and spectacular are some of the adjectives that define it. Like the rest of the BMW X products, with the exception of the BMW X1, the large SUV is created at the American plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, United States.

Technical characteristics of the BMW X7

A new generation of vehicles requires versatile and functional technology capable of adapting to various needs and requirements. The CLAR platform, Cluster Architecture, has become the backbone of the entire range of BMW products. A modular platform that, depending on its size, is capable of adapting to a variety of models, from the BMW Serie 3 until BMW Serie 8.

For the specific case of the X7, the chassis has been stretched to the maximum of its capacities, as in the Series 7. Outwardly, it makes any of its brothers look ridiculous with dimensions that reach 5,16 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1,8 meters high. To these not at all discreet dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 3,1 meters. Battle that allows you to offer a maximum habitability of seven passengers.

But that amount can range between the six seats in a 2+2+2 arrangement or the seven seats with a 2+3+2 architecture. Obviously the last row is retractable, so there is no problem in having four or five seats. As far as load capacity is concerned, the BMW X7 announces a volume of 750 liters, reduced to 326 liters with all seven seats folded down, or 2.120 liters if the second and third rows are folded down.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the BMW X7

With the 2022 update, the X7 changes its mechanical offer, adapting it to new configurations. The mechanical portfolio consists of two gasoline units and another diesel. All units come standard with air suspension, automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. Despite not offering highly outstanding electrified systems, the 2022 renewal allows the introduction of MHEV mechanics with the advantageous DGT ECO label.

The diesel branch starts with the x7 xDriv40d. Its 2.993 cubic centimeter in-line six-cylinder engine develops 352 horsepower at 4.400 revolutions and 700 Nm of torque between 1.750 and 2.250 revolutions. At the moment it is the only diesel in the family after the disappearance of units 30d and 50d in the renewal of 2022.

The supply of gasoline is also limited, and in this case it starts with the X7 xDrive40i. A revised three-liter inline six-cylinder block that delivers 381 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque maximum. The most powerful of all, the X7 M60i (previously named the M50i), features a turbocharged 8-liter V4,4 with 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. Despite its size, it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,7 seconds.

Equipment of the BMW X7

The exterior appearance and the mechanics have not been the only elements that have been modified after the 2022 renovation. The interior is another of the change scenarios, applying a much deeper facelift than usual. Nonetheless, de doors inside the X7 offers a luxury cabin both in systems and materials, where the sensation of perceived quality is very high and pleasant.

The renewed presentation is accompanied by a greater number of on-board systems that make life on board more pleasant. As usual in the house, BMW structures the equipment in several levels, two to be specific: Base and M Sport. The differences between them are notable, and not only in terms of equipment. Aesthetically, the differences are obvious, offering a sportier look in the M Sport finish.

The equipment is not the only thing that changes at each step, so does the design and interior configuration. The list of technological details is impressive, highlighting elements such as: laser headlights, 12,3-inch double panel, illuminated panoramic roof, HUD, five-zone climate control, television system, night vision, massage in front and rear seats, and a complete safety equipment and driving assistants.

The X7 market is a very limited and exclusive market. The buyers who want and can get their services are few, and the vast majority of them choose to make custom orders to the factory. that wants that alternative sales channels are almost non-existent. The few units for sale that exist offer high prices, although with the advantage of low mileage.

If we take a look at the second-hand market we see that prices start at around 94.000 euros for 7 X2020 with access diesel engine and less than 20.000 kilometers. From there the figures can grow to almost 130 thousand euros for very complete units with M50d mechanics. The Km 0 channel suffers from the same problem, there are no units since the dealers, given the low demand, do not accumulate stock to launch to such a market.

If you think that being a F-segment luxury SUV doesn't have many rivals to contend with, you are completely wrong. Although it is not the most popular market of all, the vast majority of premium and luxury firms fight in it. So much so that some rivals of the X7 are: Listen Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz GLS y Porsche Cayenne. In addition to these, we can add others that are on a higher level in terms of luxury and price, such as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga.
