Korean manufacturers are gradually conquering niches and markets throughout the world. The group Hyundai/KIA has grown enormously thanks to excellent generalist products. And of course the next step is to conquer the premium market, something that is already happening thanks to products like the Genesis GV80.

Genesis is the luxury division of the Korean automobile group. A brand born to conquer the world premium market, a market dominated with an iron hand by brands such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Lexus o Mercedes. The first time we saw such a name was associated with a Hyundai, the Hyundai Genesis, which landed in our market as a sign of good Asian work.

In 2015 the Genesis brand appears on the market, and since then it has not stopped dazzling the world with very attractive and interesting products. The Genesis GV80, along with the Genesis G80, is the first model of the firm to arrive in our country. A large SUV that by size is positioned in the D-SUV segment.

Technical characteristics of the Genesis GV80

It must be taken into account that in the structure of the Hyundai Group there is no larger SUV, not even the Hyundai Santa Fe o KIA Sorrento. That means that when developing the GV80 a new platform had to be created, a modular structure that would adapt to the particular conditions of the SUV and could also equip different mechanical systems.

The platform of the Genesis GV80 is shared with the G80, although with obvious modifications. As far as size is concerned, the external dimensions take us to the 4,94 meters long, 1,97 meters wide and 1,71 meters high. Generous proportions to which we must add a wheelbase of 2,95 meters. A generous battle to accommodate a maximum of seven passengers.

Thanks to its size, the GV80 is capable of including a third row of seats. Two additional seats that are electrically hidden under the floor of a large trunk. As for the load capacity, Genesis has not provided precise data on the size of the trunk. What it has announced are weights, which range between 2.025 and 2.135 kilograms depending on the version.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Genesis GV80

To consider a model as premium, certain conditions must be met, in addition to design, equipment or quality. The mechanical range greatly conditions access to such qualification. In the specific case of the Genesis GV80 the range is structured in three variants; one diesel and two gasoline. They all mount eight-speed automatic gearboxes.

By power, the range starts with the diesel variant. It uses a six-cylinder in-line engine with three liters of displacement. develop 278 horses at 3.800 revolutions and 588 Nm of torque between 1.500 and 3.000 revolutions. In this case the energy moves only to the rear wheels without the possibility of change.

Next on the list is the GV80 2.5 petrol. A turbocharged four-cylinder block develops 304 horses at 5.800 revolutions and 422 Nm of torque between 1.650 and 4.000 laps. The most powerful of the house is the GV80 V6 3.5T-GDI. It offers a maximum power of 380 horsepower at 5.800 revolutions and a torque of 530 Nm between 1.300 and 4.500 laps.

Equipment of the Genesis GV80

From the inside out, the Genesis GV80 surprises with the quality of its composition. A well presented structure in design and materials, using surfaces such as wood, leather or glass. The sense of perceived quality is very high, something that helps to increase the premium concept of the model and the ride comfort received by all occupants.

At the moment it has not been detailed how the range of equipment for the GV80 will be composed. Expect a very rich deployment of systems from the starting point. A very generous standard equipment that will be completed with various customization packages. Of course, in terms of technology, it offers the latest developments of the conglomerate.

That technology is very similar to what we can find us in any of the premium models that the Genesis GV80 intends to stand up to. Elements such as: LED matrix headlights, HUD, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with a 14,5-inch screen, voice control, connectivity for smartphones, massage seats and a complete safety equipment stand out.

Much of the GV80's equipment is focused on improving occupant safety. Euro NCAP has put such systems to the test, in addition to the resistance of the structure, in its classic safety tests, giving the large Korean SUV its esteemed five safety stars. By sections, the results have been: 9,1 in protection of adult passengers, 8,7 in protection of child passengers, 6,6 in pedestrian vulnerability (the high nose drags this assessment), and 8,8 in operation and response of driving assistants.

Rivals of the Genesis GV80

At the moment of truth, the intention of the Hyundai Group is to stand up to the all-powerful European premium brands, the great dominators of the industry throughout the world. The Genesis GV80 faces some very tough and famous competition that will not have an easy time getting off the podium. Due to its size and concept, the rivals of the great Korean SUV are: BMW X5, Listen Q7, Mercedes GLE, Lexus RX, Range Rover y Volvo XC90. We can also add other cheaper units such as Ford Explorer, Volkswagen Touareg or Toyota Highlander, although both are one step below in quality and performance.
