Maserati lives a second, or third youth. The iconic and classic Italian firm has seen in the Stellantis Group more than a partner; an ally to relaunch the brand after its particular odyssey through the desert. The trident firm has been very active with the launch of new products such as the Greek Maserati, to which is also added the Maserati Gran Turismo new generation.

The GranTurismo name is one of the most used in the Italian house. A denomination that has historically been tied to high-performance and highly attractive models. After saying goodbye to its previous edition, the Maserati Gran Turismo 2018, the new generation is radically different, including an exclusive 100% electric unit with crazy performance.

Technical characteristics of the Maserati GranTurismo

The radical changes undergone by the new generation have meant comprehensive modifications. The GranTurismo changes from head to toe although it remains within the category of sports coupé with an interior layout in a classic 2+2 format. One of the most important innovations is the addition of a 100% electric edition that arrives under the surname Folgore, the same as in the case of Grecale.

Employing a completely new structure, the GranTurismo adapts to new market norms. The same state-of-the-art platform is used for all models, including thermal and electric. Construction includes lightweight, high-strength materials such as steel and magnesium. By size it enters the format of large sports cars: 4,96 meters long, 1,96 meters wide and 1,35 meters high.

To these measures must be added a fairly generous wheelbase, reaching 2,93 meters long that becomes a space for four occupants, although without much space for rear occupants. Regarding load capacity, the Maserati GranTurismo offers a trunk with 310 liters of capacity (270 liters for the Folgore). The announced weight ranges between 1.795 and 2.260 kilograms of the Folgore version.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Maserati GranTurismo

The new Maserati GranTurismo will radically change its concept, although it will also maintain a classic range of engines in some of its versions. The mechanical offer includes a range of solutions, from the six-cylinder block from the Maserati MC20 with more than 600 horsepower, up to the aforementioned electric unit.

By power the range starts with the version Gran Turismo Modena. It uses a six-cylinder V-shaped gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.992 cubic centimeters. Offers 496 horsepower at 6.500 revolutions and a torque of 600 Nm at 3.000 revolutions. Power is directed to all four wheels by managing a torque converter-type 8-speed automatic gearbox. Above that unit is the GranTurismo Trofeo that extends performance to 557 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque.

The most powerful version of all is the Granturismo Folgore, the 100% electric version. With a partially modified structure has three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear. Together they generate a maximum power of 761 horsepower and 1.350 Nm of torque. The energy is supplied by a battery with 83 kWh of net capacity whose autonomy has not yet been announced. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2,7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 320 km/h.

Equipment of the Maserati GranTurismo

As far as equipment is concerned, the GranTurismo enters a new generation thanks to the use of cutting-edge technologies never seen before in the Italian house. Maserati offers almost all possible equipment from the start. Nonetheless divides the range of finishes according to the different mechanical versions: Modena, Trofeo and Folgore. The main differences between them lie in performance and design, although there are also variations in equipment issues.

Thanks to this union with the Stellantis Group, Maserati has within its reach state-of-the-art systems such as LED matrix headlights, connectivity systems, digital instrumentation, multimedia screens and a wide range of on-board technologies. All of them are arranged inside a highly evolved GranTurismo that improves quality standards compared to its previous generation.

Maserati GranTurismo rivals

Initially, the Maserati GranTurismo does not change its sporting or commercial focus. It continues to position itself as a high-performance Italian supercar that has to face very important rivals. The arrival of this electric variant will raise it to new heights and also new rivals. Despite this, we distinguish opponents of the stature of: Audi R8, Porsche 911, BMW M8, Mercedes-AMG GT, Aston Martin DB11, Jaguar F-Type y Nissan GT-R, among others.
