Such is the growth in orders and deliveries in the increasingly congested cities, that many manufacturers dare in this competitive market. The Mercedes Citan is the solution provided by the brand to the industry. A versatile and functional vehicle.

The introduction of the Citan in the market took place in 2012, supposing the replacement of the already disappeared Mercedes Vaneo. Mercedes y Renault form an alliance through which the two companies help each other in certain developments. That is why the Citan is a bodywork concession of the Renault Kangoo, the light industrial of the French house.

In the summer of 2021 the Mercedes Citan undergoes an important evolution that leads to its second generation, already as a 2022 model. The changes introduced focus on all aspects, from the mechanical range to aesthetics, through an increase in systems and technology. In this way she embarks on the same path as her older sisters, the Mercedes Vito and Mercedes Sprinter.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes Citan

As we have already said, the Mercedes Citan it is based on the French Kangoo model, and that means that it uses the CMF-C platform. A structure shared by various alliance models such as the Nissan Qashqai. In this particular case, it has been modified in order to present different bodywork configurations, called: Citan Van, Citan Professional Tourer and Citan Private Tourer, plus a specific touring version known by the name Mercedes T-Class.

Each body focuses on one aspect. The Citan is intended for mixed industrial/passenger use. At the moment it has only been announced in a single size, corresponding to the large version. It has 4,5 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,81 meters high. To these levels must be added a wheelbase of 2,72 meters. Inside, between two and five passengers can be sheltered, with extra-long bodies coming later with expanded size and up to seven seats.

As far as the cargo area is concerned, the Mercedes Citan Largo offers a maximum authorized mass between 1.960 and 2.173 kilograms. The length of the box reaches 1,81 meters and 1,26 meters high. The total volume is 2,35 cubic meters. It is offered with three doors, two rear in 60:40 split and one side. The Citan Tourer version shows a trunk with 520 liters of capacity.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes Citan

When it comes to mobilizing the Mercedes Citan, a range of low-power, but high-capacity engines is used. For its second generation, the mechanical offer is extended, offering different alternatives. The range is made up of two petrol versions, three diesel versions and a 100% electric unit recognized by the name eCitan. All versions send power to the front axle by managing an automatic or manual gearbox depending on the version chosen.

By power the They quote 108 CDI is placed as the access version. 75 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque engine extracted from a turbodiesel block of four cylinders and 1.461 cubic centimeters. Employing that engine is the They quote 110 CDI of 95 horses and 260 Nm and They quote 112 CDI of 116 horses and 270 Nm of torque. The gasoline versions use a turbocharged block of four cylinders and 1.332 cubic centimeters. In a first range of power is the They quote 110 with 102 hp and 200 Nm. Above it we find the They quote 113 with 131 horses and 240 Nm of torque.

The real novelty of this generation is the electric variant, the eCitan. Contrary to previous models, only one version is offered. A battery with a useful capacity of 44 kWh is the main element of the set. It is coupled with an engine with 102 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque. According to homologation data the electric autonomy reaches 285 kilometers. For recharging, fast charging systems of up to 75 kW in direct current are chosen. Being able to go from 0 to 80% of the load in 40 minutes.

Equipment of the Mercedes Citan

When talking about equipment and added systems in the Mercedes Citan, it must be recognized that the new generation is very complete in terms of technology. The industrial version has a more spartan approach and somewhat poorer equipment than the passenger unit. Both will be surpassed by the Mercedes T-Class, which will have the same correlation as the Mercedes Vito and Mercedes V Class.

As for the composition of its interior, the massive use of hard plastics reduces the sense of perceived quality. Materials designed for professional use. The feeling of quality is not very great, but on the other hand a high durability is perceived. As is the custom in the house, Mercedes offers two trim levels: BASE and PRO. Many optional elements can be added to them that will make life on board more comfortable, although they will considerably increase the final price.

If we talk about equipment itself, the use of the CMF-C platform allows it to offer more common technologies in passenger cars. Elements such as: LED headlights, heated front seats, MBUX multimedia system with touch screen, parking camera, connectivity for mobile devices, air conditioning and a wide range of driving assistants and safety elements stand out.

The Mercedes Citan of Km 0 and Second Hand

As is customary with industrial vehicles, or derived from them, the offer available in secondary sales channels is not excessive. They are vehicles that are usually withdrawn for direct scrapping. A lot of durability that ends in the purchase of a new model. As for the Mercedes Citan, it is observed that its devaluation is typical of the segment, showing itself to be very similar to that of rival models.

If we take a look at the used or second-hand market, we see how the cheapest prices correspond to the Citan Furgón units with access mechanics. In that case, prices start from figures close to 8.500 euros. As such, there are no Km 0 models, there are units with few kilometers available, whose price does not represent a great advantage over factory models. For the moment, and until the arrival of the second generation, all the models for sale correspond to the first edition.

Rivals of the Mercedes Citan

When talking about rivals to the Mercedes Citan, we must recognize the significant expansion of the market for adapted light commercial vehicles in recent years. Though the Mercedes is considered one of the most expensive models in the industry, the reality is that we can attend to other direct opponents such as the aforementioned Kangoo, Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Ford Tourneo, Volkswagen Caddy, Opel Combo, Toyota Pro Ace City y Dacia Dokker, All are similar models in concept, bodywork, versions, although the German model is at the top for sale price.
