The emission neutrality objectives set by the European Union have forced a change in the mobility paradigm. The future is dictated by electrical technology, and it is now that all manufacturers find themselves in that decisive moment of launching new products on the market. Renault has extensive experience in the field, although it has just launched its most ambitious product, the Renault Megane E-TECH.

E-TECH is the name that the French house uses for its electrified technology, either totally or partially. It is not the first time that we have seen it since some time ago we have known it in other models such as the Renault Clio or Renault Captur. Nor can we consider the Megane E-TECH as the first electric of the house, since that honor will always correspond to the Renault ZOE or Renault Twizydepending on how you want to look at it.

But we can say that the electric Mégane is the first of a new era. It is clear that borrowing the name of the Renault Mégane, we are talking about a 100% electric variant of it. Presented in September 2021, the Megane E-TECH is completely different from its thermal brother, sporting a completely different look than almost any other product in the house.

Technical characteristics Renault Megane E-TECH

Renault is a fundamental part of an alliance signed with Nissan y Mitsubishi. This fact causes the three companies to share technologies and developments. The new French electric hides the CMF-EV platform under its crossover body of the automotive conglomerate. It is an architecture specially designed for electric models and that we had previously seen in the Nissan ariya, the first cousin of the Megane E-TECH.

Although its forms give rise to think that we are talking about a very large car, the reality is that the measures are quite contained. The design is in charge of creating that robust and large look. Outwardly it reaches 4,2 meters long, 1,77 meters wide and 1,5 meters high, so it fits perfectly in the B segment. It has nothing to do with its thermal counterpart, staying 15 centimeters below in length. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,68 meters.

This generous battle allows it to offer a very correct interior space thanks to the fact that the wheels are located at the ends of the vehicle. It offers a maximum capacity of five passengers, three of them located on a rear bench of correct dimensions. As for the trunk, the Renault Megane E-TECH announces a minimum volume of 389 liters, a figure that can be increased to 1.245 liters if the second row of seats is completely folded down. There is no front trunk.

Mechanical range of the Renault Megane E-TECH

As with all electric models, the mechanical range does not rotate mainly in terms of the size of the motor, but rather based on the size of the battery. The Renault Megane E-TECH range currently offers two versions, both 100% electric. The electrical scheme, consisting of motor and transmission, weighs 145 kilograms, and its batteries are manufactured by the company LG Chem with lithium ion technology with NCM ternary cathode.

The access version, considered Megane E-TECH EV40, has a 40 kWh net capacity battery in a central position that feeds a front motor 130 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. It homologates an electric autonomy in the WLTP cycle of 300 kilometers. Above is the version EV60 with a net battery of 60 kWh. develop 220 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. In this case, an approved autonomy in the WLTP cycle of 450 kilometers is announced.

As for recharging, Renault proposes various systems depending on the primary use that is going to be given to the vehicle. At the access level, the Megane E-TECH EV40 offers a recharging power of only 7,4 kW, being able to reach a maximum of 22 kW in a higher mode. The units with 60 kWh battery will be able to accelerate the rate of recharging up to 130 kW, offering a minimum of 7,4 or 22 kW depending on the version chosen.

Equipment of the Renault Megane E-TECH

Renault Megane E-Tech interior

As its exterior shows, the Renault Megane E-TECH has little or nothing to do with its thermal brother. From doors to the inside it retains certain elements of this, but they also have nothing to do with each other. While the compact Mégane suffers from certain age problems, despite its constant updates, the electric model is much more committed to technology and equipment.

As is customary in the French house, the equipment offer is structured in different levels of finish. The range revolves around three versions, from lowest to highest endowment we find: Equilibre, Techno and Iconic. The main differences between them lie in the system load and the mechanical offer available. Personalized aesthetic elements are also applied, being able to go from a more sober appearance to a more sporty one.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Renault Megane E-TECH is announced as the most advanced model of the firm. Inside, the presence of a double digital panel, one fulfilling the instrumentation functions and the other as the main axis of the multimedia system. The latter offers a maximum size of 9,3 inches in the vertical position. To this we must add a wide variety of elements such as LED headlights, connectivity for mobile devices, comfort details, and a complete safety equipment and driving assistants.

Rivals of the Renault Megane E-TECH

As we have already said, the electric market is growing exponentially in recent months. All brands are in that delicate moment where they are exposing their new creations to the world. The utility segment grows above average as reasonably priced electric models are offered. That means that the rivals of the Renault Megane E-TECH are numerous and increasingly important within the market and companies. Some of his enemies are: Volkswagen ID.3, Nissan LEAF, Citroen ë-C4, CUPRA born, DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE, Peugeot e-208 y Opel Corsa-e, among others. They are all similar in size and capabilities.
