Fisker patents solid-state batteries that recharge in 1 minute

Fisker's patent for solid-state batteries

The revolutionary Fisker brand has patented a new technology of flexible solid state batteries, which according to those responsible could drastically revolutionize the automobile industry. Thanks to them, cars like your Fisker Emotion it could reach a range of 800 km, but even more importantly, they could be recharged in just a minute.

The company, which is currently finishing development of the EMotion for its world premiere at CES 2018, says it has succeeded in developing a solid-state battery. capable of storing 2,5 times more energy than current Lithium Ion batteries. A capacity similar to that announced Toyota for the electric car which will launch in five years. But beyond their amazing storage capabilities and charging speed, Fisker batteries hide an even more important quality in these times. As is often said, when the need tightens the ingenuity is sharpened.

New batteries to adapt to difficulties

Fisker's plans for his EMotion batteries were very different a few months ago. As the brand usually does, tried to adopt underdeveloped but very promising technologies, to differentiate yourself from your competitors and stay one step ahead. It was about the graphene batteries, which theoretically would have capacities well above those based on lithium. However, the supplier that was going to make them, Nanotech Energy, unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in July. So Fisker had to find a solution that was up to the task, and turned to solid-state Lithium Ion batteries developed by LG Chem, a supplier in South Korea.

Fisker patents new solid-state batteries

The secret of these newly patented solid-state batteries is that they have three-dimensional solid electrodes with up to 25 times more surface area than other batteries of the same type. The development of this technology is still in its early phase, but, as the patent indicates, they have an advantage that would facilitate their arrival in street cars: its production cost can be a third of what batteries currently cost.

Will Fisker solid-state batteries become a reality?

The Fisker company's journey since its launch has been bumpy. Something understandable considering the risk of adopting technologies in full development. However, this brand is now owned by the wealthy Chinese multinational Wanxiang. What a logistical and above all economic support that can give much more confidence in the daring movements of the company of American origin.
