When we talk about compact, we all think of a series of models that accumulate years and years of experience for sale. The Honda Civic is one of those names. Since then, Honda has added more than 20 million units produced of the Civic in these almost 50 years of life. Five decades that place it as one of the most notable references. The last of its editions is officially launched in the first quarter of 2022, a few months later the most extreme version appears on the scene, the beloved Civic Type-R version. The previous generation, 2017 Honda Civic he left an imprint that his successor extends over time.

Technical characteristics of the Honda Civic

Generation after generation, the Civic has been gaining in qualities and also in size. The previous edition stood out for its considerable increase in measurements. Thanks to the use of a new platform, specially developed to house hybrid drive systems and new generation, the Japanese compact is no longer so compact.

Despite being a compact, it can be said that the size of the Civic is worthy of a higher category, being the largest in the European C segment. Externally it reaches 4,55 meters long, 1,8 meters wide and 1,41 meters high.. To these levels must be added a wheelbase of 2,73 meters, which translates into a cabin designed for a maximum of five passengers.

Three of them are installed on a rear bench seat with good legroom, although somewhat more fair in height where passengers over 1,85 meters will have difficulty traveling. Regarding load capacity, the Honda Civic announces a minimum boot volume of 410 liters, a figure that can be expanded to 1.220 liters if the second row is completely folded down in a 60:40 ratio.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Honda Civic

Honda Civic Type R Side

Things have changed a lot since Honda launched the original Civic in 1973. The new, and increasingly demanding, anti-pollution regulations have caused the modification of the Japanese compact's mechanical portfolio. The previous generation stood out for the absence of diesel engines, and This eleventh edition does so by only offering hybrid systems with an approved consumption of 4,7 liters per 100 kilometres.

The exact name is that of Honda Civic e:HEV, since it uses a scheme very similar to the one offered in the new Honda HR-V. It is a non-plug-in hybrid scheme with a two-liter Atkinson cycle engine. With a advertised power of 184 horsepower and 313 Nm of torque, the system allows offering low consumption thanks to the fact that the thermal block acts mainly as a generator, powered by the battery which in turn supplies power to the electric motor.

Above the hybrid version is the Honda Civic Type R, which bets exclusively on thermal mechanics. Count with one two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine generating 329 horsepower. It is the same block of the previous generation with certain technical modifications, such as better turbo performance. All power is directed to the front axle by managing a six-speed manual gearbox.

Equipment of the Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has always stood out for its excellent price-product ratio. With a very pleasant and dynamic driving, from doors inside some of its generations will be remembered for its spectacular interiors. Not so the eleventh edition that shows a very neutral aspect with an inconspicuous presentation.

As always, the quality of execution of the Japanese stands out above all else. Well-selected materials and an excellent manufacturing process make it possible to offer an interior whose sense of perceived quality is high. That quality is completed with a State-of-the-art technological deployment spread over three finishing lines: Elegance, Sport and Advance, highlighting extensive standard equipment. Separately is the Type R, which offers more advanced equipment and a particular and much more risky aesthetic.

As far as equipment is concerned, the new Civic has the latest advances from the house, showing very complete systems that are still pending staggering in their commercial offer. Elements such as: LED headlights, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with a 9-inch touch screen, connectivity for mobile devices and extensive safety equipment collected under the Honda Sensing program stand out.

The Honda Civic of Km 0 and second hand

Given the long history of editions and generations, the Honda Civic has always shown good sales results, although far from the top positions. Thanks to its excellent reputation for durability and reliability, depreciation is kept at controlled levels, hovering around an average of 29%, standard data within the category.

If we take a look at the used and second-hand channel we see that the most affordable units correspond to those of the fourth generation (1996 – 2000), prices start from figures close to 500 euros. Previous models raise the price to approximately 3.800 euros at least. The Km 0 offer focuses exclusively on the tenth generation models waiting for new units.

Rivals of the Honda Civic

To speak of the compact segment is to speak of the most popular segment of the European market. For this reason the Civic has numerous rivals to stand up to, some as important as the Volkswagen Golf, SEAT Leon or Peugeot 308. In addition to these, we can find large-volume general models such as the Toyota Corolla, Kia ceed, Hyundai i30, Opel Astra, Ford Focus or Mazda3, among others.
