Although the Maserati Levante It is the most recent and sold star within the house, the Italians do not forget a classic segment and just as important within the luxury firms. Nobody wants to be the model of access, but in the case of the house of the trident that honor corresponds to the Maserati Ghibli. A new model with an old name.

And it is that, although it was in 2013 when we met the current Ghibli, the name had already been used twice before in the house. The first time in 1967, in a three-door GT and 2+2 configuration. Subsequently, and after abandoning the model in 72, Maserati used it again in 1992, once again associated with a coupé with a 2+2 layout that was in production until 1998.

And finally you have to move 15 years later to meet the Maserati Ghibli that we now know. Over the years the sedan has gradually adapted to new trends and demands, although it was not until 2017 when a more complete restyling took place. In the year 2019 improvements are also introduced, mainly in a mechanical part with the arrival of the most radical and efficient versions that the model has known.

Technical characteristics of the Maserati Ghibli

Maserati Ghibli MY19

Until recently, the FCA Group, a group in which Maserati, was allied with the American conglomerate Chrysler. At the time in which the Ghibli was developed, that alliance was in force, and therefore the Italian saloon enjoys a platform of American origin, LLC platform, although it has been adapted to the requirements of the house. It is the same structure, although in a smaller version, that we can see in his older brother.

In the case of the Ghibli, its measurements make it the smallest sedan in the house. 4,97 meters long, 1,94 meters wide and 1,46 meters high. To these levels must be added a battle of three meters. A wheelbase that translates into a passenger compartment developed for a maximum of five passengers, although because of a too narrow central rear seat, it is best not to exceed four.

Although the Quattroporte is considerably larger, the Ghibli manages to make better use of shapes and spaces for cargo capacity. The official volume of its trunk is 500 liters. The last fact that is worth noting is the weight. In its lightest configuration, the Maserati Ghibli offers a scale weight of 1.885 kilograms.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Maserati Ghibli

The soul and reason for being of a Maserati is hidden under the hood. Although it is the model of access to the signature, the Ghibli has the same mechanical offer as its older brother, Maserati Quattroporte, albeit with some added workaround. The range is made up of a diesel, three gasoline and a hybrid. The latter has been introduced to the fleet in 2019.

The access version is the Maserati Ghibli Diesel with 275 horses. It is followed by the dry Ghibli that uses a three-liter V6 engine with 349 horsepower. From there we jump to the Ghibli S that, with the same engine as the previous one, raises the power to 430 horses. Finally, the most powerful of the house, the Ghibli Trofeo, uses a 8-liter V3,8 that reaches 580 horses.

The most efficient unit is collected by a low hybridization hybrid scheme. It has an engine two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is connected to a lithium-ion battery and 48-volt auxiliary electrical scheme. It develops 330 horsepower and has an approved average consumption of 8,5 litres. All units arrive associated with an automatic gearbox, and depending on the version, the power will go to the rear axle or all four wheels.

Maserati Ghibli Equipment

Maserati Ghibli Hybrid 2021

From the inside, the Maserati Ghibli transmits all those sensations of luxury that are expected from the Italian brand. Those of Modena have used high-quality materials such as merino leather, Alcantara, carbon fiber or wood. Thanks to this, the occupants enjoy a luxurious experience, superior to what other rivals can offer. Do not forget that Maserati is a luxury firm, not premium.

The range of equipment is based on the same structure that is already known to us. Within each level of power and performance we can in turn choose between various finishing lines: Base, GranLusso and GranSport. In each of them, not only is the amount of equipment increased, but the appearance is also slightly modified, going from a sober finish to a more sporty one with the GranSport level.

As far as pure equipment is concerned, the Ghibli penalizes in the same terms as its brothers. It is not capable of matching the immense number of systems presented by its German rivals, but that does not mean that it is a poor sedan. Among the elements stand out: LED matrix headlights, keyless access and start, sunroof, heated front seats, three-zone climate control, rear camera, and many customizable elements. We must not forget either an extensive help team and driving assistants.

The Maserati Ghibli according to Euro NCAP

Euro NCAP subjected the Maserati Ghibli to its impact test in 2013 giving it the highest possible score, 5 stars. The different safety tests were passed with these notes. The protection offered to adult and child occupants in case of impact amounts to 95 and 79 percent respectively. In the event of a collision with pedestrians and cyclists, it reaches a protection of 74 percent. Finally, in terms of active driving aids, it achieved 81 percent protection.

The Maserati Ghibli of Km 0 and second hand

Despite being the model that gives access to the Italian firm's range, finding Maserati Ghibli units on the second-hand or zero kilometer market is very unusual. Its average depreciation remains at a good 26,5 percent, improving the data of its main rivals. It remains a very exclusive car even in secondary sales channels.

If we are interested in a second hand unit, prices start at figures close to 25.000 euros for 2015 models with gasoline mechanics. As such, the Km 0 market is non-existent, and the second-hand units that we find shoot their prices above 90.000 euros. In these cases, they are late-year models with applied restyling and a V6 gasoline engine.

Maserati Ghibli rivals

Possibly the Maserati Ghibli is the most neglected midsize sedan on the market. His segment pits him against very important names in the industry, models that for the most part are born in Germany with all that that implies. Its most direct rivals are: Audi A6, BMW Serie 5, Mercedes E-Class y Jaguar XF mainly. Among them, the Italian stands out for his performance and for his greater exclusivity. On the contrary, he penalizes equipment and price, being the most expensive of the entire list.
