BMW's new unique NK platform for electric and thermal in 2025?

BMW Serie 3

The steps of all manufacturers go in the same direction. At present and in the short term the plan is continue launching internal combustion cars on the market, while developing and starting the marketing of new electric vehicles. Of course, in the future it seems that thermal engines have no place in the market. At least in Europe.

According to the latest rumors, BMW is already thinking of launching a new all-electric BMW 3 Series with electric platform. In other words, the successful sedan with traditional engines will continue to exist, but an electric 3 Series with an electric car platform will not take too long to appear. They talk about the year 2025.

The British medium Coach comments in its publication that the German firm will inaugurate the platform New Class EV. In fact, they warn the internal code will be NK1, being sold alongside other new battery sedans and combustion engines in BMW's long process of transformation towards electrification.

"This platform will pave the way for the new range of electric vehicles, which will include sports models."

If we look back, the current saloon arrived on the market in 2018, with internal denomination G20. It hasn't received any major updates yet, and considering the rumored date is 2025, it's very likely that the current one is the last BMW 3 Series as we've known it since the 70s. The change will be very big from one car to another.

«The Neue Klasse represents the beginning of a new phase of operations for BMWsaid head of research and development Frank Weber. «It's scaled to allow us to build electric cars from a Series 2-sized sedan to an X7-sized SUV.«.

According to the Autocar notes, this new NK platform will be developed for future electric vehicles, but at the same time it also allows the incorporation of a thermal engine on the front hood. If this is true, it would be rare that in just four years the German firm completely abandoned internal combustion mechanics, the marketing of, at least, plug-in hybrids in the 3 Series being quite logical.

In this way (I repeat, according to rumours), the NK platform would allow the creation of electric and thermal cars on the same assembly lines. I mean, it would be a single platform for both large and small cars, and battery and internal combustion versions. This would improve the company's production efficiency, or what is the same, reduce costs.
