After several long years of waiting, the Toyota Supra it was finally made official. In this article We tell you all about the new Japanese sports car developed alongside the BMW Z4. For us, the arrival of the new Supra is great news, but it may have a negative point, and that is that the continuity of the Toyota GT86 is not clear.
El Toyota GT86 is one of pure sports relatively more economical and fun to drive that are currently on the market, although it is true that its price has risen over time and it is no longer as affordable. Despite this, we are still totally in love with the sensations it transmits when driving it.
Economic power
We fear for its continuity in the market because the Toyota Supra is a car in which the brand has had to focus a lot of effort -and money- (despite having been developed with the Z4); So it is not clear to us that the company is considering a complete renovation of the GT86, which has been on the market since 2012 and, therefore, would have to be carried out very soon. They are probably not willing to invest large amounts in another product -so often- that is not exactly of great volume.
Similar outside dimensions
Another reason why it is difficult for us to be optimistic in the renewal of the Toyota GT86 is that, by size, the Supra and he are very similar:
Toyota Supra | Toyota GT86 | |
---|---|---|
Toyota Supra | Toyota GT86 | |
Long | 4.380 mm | 4.240 mm |
Ancho Steak: | 1.865 mm | 1.775 mm |
High | 1.290 mm | 1.285 mm |
Battle | 2.470 mm | 2.570 mm |
As you can see, the Supra is slightly longer, slightly wider and practically the same height. In addition, it also has a 10 cm more contained wheelbase than the GT86, so in theory it will feel like a more agile car on twisty roads.
An access version with turbo and 197 hp for the Supra
Although Toyota Spain has not yet confirmed whether the access variant, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, will be available here; we know that Japan will land with a power of 197 CV. It is a supercharged engine, with a torque of 320 Nm between 1.450 and 4.200 rpm, a lot fuller and more usable than the 205 Nm at 6.500 rpm of the GT86.
It is known by all that many customers -and potential customers- of the Toyota GT86 they have complained about the lack of oomph at low and medium speed of this model due to its atmospheric engine condition. You know, for it to walk you have to take it up high, as I told you when I tried it months ago.
The access mechanics, in addition to reduce the starting price of the Toyota Supra, it would solve this “endemic evil” due to its flatter operation, although to tell the truth it would also lose the charisma of constantly playing with the change to make it “cheerful”.
