Although car sales in Europe have fallen to levels not seen since 1993, the Spanish car market has started 2023 on the right foot, as Last January, 51,4% more passenger cars were transferred compared to the same period of the previous year. This is undoubtedly good news, but it must be qualified that the current figures are still a long way from those registered before the pandemic.

The first month of 2023 has closed with exactly 64.147 registrations of conventional and off-road cars. Half have gone to the private channel and the other to company fleets and renters. According to the association of manufacturers in our country, ANFAC, "this strong increase (more than 50%) is due in large part to the units sold in December that were registered in January, but mainly to the fact that the market volume of the previous year (2022) was at very low levels due to the microchip crisis and transportation bottlenecks.”

In other words, despite the positive results of the previous year-on-year data, these they must be relativized and put it in context, since they have important seasonal components and are compared to a time when chaos reigned at the commercial and industrial level. To be fair, we must refer to the numbers of January 2020 registrations, before the outbreak of COVID-19 and with a much more stable scenario. During that period they sold 86.450 automobiles, what translates into 25,8% more than now.

In the last monthly report of ANFAC also shows a improvement, although more subtle, in the registrations of the rest of the vehicles: 34,8% more light commercials and 20,9% more industrial and buses. As for the leaders, Toyota remains the most successful brand and Dacia Sandero continues as the most popular model. Midsize SUVs are the fastest growing products, as are alternative powertrains, which already account for 46,6% of the total.

In addition, today, the Spanish Renting Association (AER) has said that, in January 2023, long-term car rental companies have managed to place no less than 17.587 units, practically 60% more than in January 2022. He assures that they already represent one in five operations in our territory, which gives hope to the sector as a whole.
