The BMW X2 is getting closer, new spy photos

SUV fever. This is what we usually call the great "rise" of the SUV-type models that have been achieving so many sales in recent years. It is the segment that is currently growing the most in Europe and they are cannibalizing sales of medium saloons and minivans. Also, more and more variants appear, such as SUV coupes. Such traditional brands as Mercedes already have their own coupé body SUV and, it seems, that the next incorporation will be the BMW X2.

this future BMW X2 has been in development for more than a year, having been hunted on multiple occasions on various roads of the Old Continent. It will probably hit the market at the end of 2017 or at the beginning of 2018, making the Bavarian brand have presence in a segment unknown to them so far, that of compact SUVs with coupé bodywork. In any case, as we see in the images, the silhouette is not so coupé as in the BMW X4 and BMW X6.

The reason for not giving the BMW X2 such a coupé silhouette as its older brothers is clear: don't overly sacrifice space. The BMW X6, like the Mercedes GLE Coupé, is a fairly large vehicle and, although its exterior aesthetics detract from habitability, it is still a car with enough space for four adults. With these smaller models, habitability cannot be sacrificed as much as with the large ones, since practicality would be greatly diminished.

On the other hand and continuing with the interior space, the BMW X2 will also resort to front-wheel drive instead of using the traditional BMW rear-wheel drive. In addition to improving habitability, costs are saved, since it uses the platform of the MINI Countryman, also used by the BMW X1. It is likely that some versions can be associated with the brand's xDrive all-wheel drive.

We do not expect great mechanical differences with the X1, equipping three and four cylinder blocks diesel and gasoline, all of them supercharged. The only exception might be a sports variant with a 3-liter, six-cylinder engine, although it is still too early to say so outright.
