Jeep Compass touchdown, this is its deep update

2021 Jeep Compass test

The current generation of Jeep Compass It reached the European market in 2017, marketing more than 200.000 units in the Old Continent. Now, the american firm has decided to give a twist to his product with a deep update. And it is that not many months ago we were able to test a Jeep Compass S in its 240 hp plug-in hybrid variant, noticing that some details were becoming outdated.

It seems as if the automobile firm had read our notes, since it has precisely improved its compact SUV in most of the sections in which we had a complaint. That is especially in technology and in the appearance of the interior, maintaining the good level of quality and comfort that characterizes it. We have already been able to verify it in a contact with the 150 hp Jeep Compass Limited gasoline.

Incidentally, this is the first launch in Europe of the new Stellantis Group, the result of the merger of FCA and PSA.

The most notable changes are not on the outside

Jeep Compass front test

In our case we opted for the Jeep Compass Limited trim, which is probably the most balanced, and is also the most demanded in our country. Although the update of this model is profound, it is not perceived as such in the exterior design. And, after all, why change something that works perfectly? That's what the company's designers would think.

In this way we find a slight revision in the front, where he Jeep Compass presents slight modifications gaining horizontality in its lines. If we compare it with the previous one, now it is perceived somewhat wider due to its new front bumper. In addition, some components have been redistributed, such as the bumpers or the fog lights. Indeed, lighting is LED in all versions.

Nor is it that the side view has been greatly altered, simply presenting some modifications in the designs of the rims or the usual differentiated styles depending on the finish. For example, the Trailhawk versions present that much more country image, while the S finishes are committed to sportiness. The Limited falls between those two worlds, being pleasant and attractive to all tastes.

2021 Jeep Compass rear test

If we go to the rear area, the most significant change comes from the hand of its LED rear lights. The pilots maintain their external shape but their lighting line has been retouched. In any case, if we are not too familiar with the model, we should remove the magnifying glass or put a new one next to the pre-restyling one.

Where the Jeep Compass really changes is inside

The opposite happens when we go to the passenger compartment. The renovation was necessary and Jeep has not spared in providing all the modern image and technology that the Compass deserves. The quality of the interior was already good, but now it looks infinitely more modern and technological.

Test Jeep Compass digital instrument panel

We finally have a digital instrument cluster easily configurable 10,25 in. Also introduces a new central touchscreen for infotainment 10,1 inches which helps us forget about the poor quality and display that the predecessor had. In addition, it is placed in a higher position, so it looks much better when driving.

The graphics of both the box and the central screen are already at the height of a compact SUV like this Jeep Compass.

All center console has been redistributed and now it is more functional. It is important to note that the air conditioning controls are still physical, although until we become fully familiar with the car we tend to touch the audio volume wheel when we want to vary the temperature, since said wheel is located near the air conditioning buttons.

For its part, the steering wheel has also been revised. It keeps the buttons practically unchanged, for the central section is no longer as "gross" in its appearance as before, introducing the horizontal logo in a more elegant way.

Jeep Compass Dashboard Test

Something similar happens with the entire dashboard, which has been completely redone to display a cleaner, horizontal image. For example, the main air vents have been completely redesigned, being more camouflaged. And to top it off, the rest of the surfaces remain clean, elegant and with adjustments that do not fit the slightest criticism.

A lot of interior space and a correct trunk

Logically it is not a generational change, so interior space is maintained. This means that we continue to be in a very wide model and with well-cared seats in both rows of seats. In the front seats we will be comfortable in their large seats and with a lot of room in all directions.

Test Jeep Compass rear seats

Meanwhile, the rear seats stand out especially in the space for the knees, with a lot of distance to the front backrest. The height is not so remarkable, but it is still very good for adults, without touching the ceiling with the head unless we exceed approximately 1,90 in height.

In addition, the central seat can be used by an adult of normal size, having enough width but not being as comfortable as the side ones, as usual.

If we go to trunk, there is also no change in its volume. The versions with conventional engines cover a space of 438 liters, while in the PHEV or plug-in hybrid variants the capacity drops to just 18 litres. Note that even in this area the materials and upholstery are pleasant to the touch.

Diesel, gasoline and plug-in hybrid

The mechanical offer of the Jeep Compass is simple, but quite smart considering the times. Thus, the compact SUV of the American brand is available with a 1.6 MultiJet diesel engine, two 1.3 Turbo gasoline versions and two other 4xe plug-in hybrids.

The option diesel It will be the most profitable for all those who travel many kilometers throughout the year and who need a relatively adjusted price or do not have the possibility of charging the car at home. This block 1.6 MultiJet develops 130 hp and 320 Nm, which will be enough to travel with the family. It is linked to the 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.

En gasoline the 1.3 Turbo block appears in two versions. The most accessible comes with a manual gearbox developing 130 hp and 270 Nm of torque, while the most powerful always has a six-speed dual-clutch transmission developing 150 hp and 270 Nm of torque.

The greenest options are plug-in hybrids, called 4xe, which as before are presented with two power levels. They take the same 1.3 turbo gasoline engine for the thermal part, yielding 130 CV or 180 CV depending on each version. Thus, the joint power will be 190 or 240 hp. The electrical part is handled by a 60 hp and 250 Nm electric motor placed on the rear axle, powered by an 11,4 kWh battery.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk Test

For our first contact, we wanted to opt for a rational and highly demanded variant, such as the Limited finish and the 130 hp gasoline engine. We were not able to cover a long distance, but we were able to drive through the city and on the highway.

At the driving level itself, there are not many changes, presenting in this version a comfortable set-up. The suspensions are soft, allowing to overcome bumps and other potholes smoothly. Of course, it is not a model that feels very comfortable if we have sporting pretensions, because in addition to its suspension setting, the address has a lot of electrical assistance.

Some positive points are that it is a car very well insulated acoustically and whose engine is not crude, but rather the opposite. It does not have a very energetic response either, but it will be enough if we do not usually travel with a lot of load and our driving is relaxed.

Important improvements in active safety

Jeep Compass test

Where it has made an important leap is in the security section. In fact, this is where it represents a real leap compared to the predecessor, reaching the Level 2 autonomous driving.

And it is that the new Jeep Compass can count on ADAS as important as signal recognition, intelligent speed assistant, fatigue detector, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, highway assist (adaptive cruise control combined with lane keeping assistance). And that, citing just a few.

We cannot talk about consumption because the test was too short to extract reliable data.

Conclusions

Test Jeep Compass center screen

In conclusion, the Jeep Compass has improved in those aspects in which it was becoming outdated. The exterior aesthetics still look young, even more so with the slight tweaks, but it is true that the interior design, technology and active safety features of the previous one were not as complete as they are now.

On the other hand, this model is now available with five trim levels (Sport, Longitude, Limited, S and Trailhawk), to which must be added a special edition for the brand's 80th anniversary. The starting price is 28.500 euros, appearing the Limited finish with the engine tested for 34.000 euros. In any case, Jeep It also offers us the option of leasing a unit like ours for €280/month for 36 months with a down payment of €4.700.
