Test Mercedes Class C 220D (with video)

La fifth generation of one of the most popular models of Mercedes, class C, has come with an important technological leap. We have finally been able to have it in our hands and we can say that the popular German sedan promises a lot.

In today's test we will be testing the Mercedes C-Class with mechanics named as 220D, that is, a 2.0-litre diesel engine with 200 hp and 440 Nm of torque. Bill finished of the unit that you are going to be able to see is the AMG both outside and inside.

Elegant and sporty design

The new generation of the C-Class maintains a elegant design but with this AMG finish it gives it a perfect sporty look, neither too much nor too little. Something quite common in the German firm.

Starting with The front part, the new front grille with a star design stands out, thus making a similarity to the Mercedes logo, a very successful bumper with striking air intakes and a full LED optical group that on this occasion has been given the name of Digital Light.

If we continue towards the side part, we see some colorful 19 inch rims in double size, 225/45 on the front axle and 255/40 on the rear axle. We can also see some skirts that give it a sportier touch, the chrome door handles to match the door frames and the black roof because this unit has a sunroof.

Already behind, we appreciate a profiled optical group also full LED, some air outlets on the side of the bumper that, by the way, are false and some theoretical chrome-colored exhaust outlets that only serve to give it a more sporty appearance, since they are not real. .

The interior is totally inherited from the S-Class

El interior design of the new Mercedes C-Class is practically traced to that of the S-Class, something that does not make it a bad thing if not quite the opposite, since it makes it much more striking and advanced compared to its direct rivals the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. The quality level is quite good and pleasant to the touch, all the details are well taken care of and its finishes are also up to par.

What stands out the most when we take a look at the interior of the new C-Class is the 11,9-inch infotainment screen. I really liked the layout of the air conditioning buttons, which although they are tactile, being always in the same place and being quite large makes it easier to control. We also have physical button shortcuts for certain car functions such as driving modes or driving aids.

Something that I really like about the Mercedes C-Class is its technological section, both because of the complete Mercedes MBUX system and the driving aids it offers.

keep counting on the 12,3-inch digital instrument panel display, instrumentation that is very configurable and is something that we always appreciate in order to have everything to our liking. In addition, we have a head up display which will help us take our eyes off the road even less.

continuing towards center console, we can see that it is quite minimalist. We only have a lid that if we open it, we can have access to two cup rests, one induction charging zone for our mobile device, a USB-C type charging socket and a small place to leave objects. If it has in the central armrest another space inside to leave what we want.

Now we do have Apple Car Play and Android Auto wirelessly.

Outstanding in habitability

Si we talk about habitability, the new Class C surprises a lot. The space in the front seats is very good And thanks to power-adjustable seats for both driver and front passenger, it makes it even easier to find the right driving position. If we add to that what it has massage, ventilation and heating function, the Class C seats could become the new armchair in your house without any problem.

As I always say, I am a very tall person (1.94m) and this means that it does not fit well in certain cars. In the rear seats the space is ample for the knees but not too much for the head, since I crash slightly possibly because of the sunroof. I am not saying that it is uncomfortable or has little space, but a very tall person in the rear seats will notice how it constantly rubs against the ceiling.

The central square has armrests, something that as always happens, greatly harms the comfort of it. It's not made to travel there, it gets you out of trouble and that's it, but this car is designed for 4 people to travel comfortably. Something to note is that we have independent air conditioning in the rear seats and two USB-C type sockets.

The trunk has 455 liters of capacity

C-Class trunk

The Mercedes C-Class has a 455 liter boot capacity, a space according to its category and segment. The only problem we can find is that the loading mouth is reduced, therefore large volume objects may not fit. This is solved with the Estate version of the C-Class, which is the family version.

We also have a double bottom that will help us to leave smaller objects.

At the wheel of the Mercedes C-Class 220D

The unit we are testing today has a 2.0-liter diesel engine with 200 hp and 440 Nm of torque.. The gearbox is automatic with 9 relations and torque converter type. The C-Class 220D is rear wheel drive and does 0 to 100 in 7,4 seconds while the top speed is 245 km/h. The weight is 1755 kg.

The Mercedes C-Class 220D is characterized by offering good comfort thanks to the set-up it has. The car is comfortable in every way, from making trips around the city to going on the highway at high speeds. The suspension is quite soft and you hardly notice anything, it absorbs the imperfections of the asphalt quite well. I like that despite this, the car moves quite well in sporty driving without excessive rocking.

Soundproofing, engine and steering

The great work that the German firm has done can be seen in many aspects of this Class C, one of them is soundproofing. The aerodynamic noise is practically zero, as is the rolling noise, it is so well filtered that even at 120 km/h you hardly hear anything. That is also thanks to the good aerodynamics it has.

If we talk about the engine, the 200 hp diesel mechanic seems to me the perfect combination. Contained consumption, good power, strength when you need it on slopes and a fairly fast and smooth automatic gearbox, you don't appreciate the changes.

To finish, we have a pretty precise address thanks to the little travel it has and I really like the good range of rotation. The only blameworthy thing is that it does not report too much on what happens on the asphalt, something normal considering that it is not an aspirational car.

Consumption of the Mercedes C-Class 220D

Now we are going to talk about one of the characteristics that could define this Mercedes C-Class 220D, consumption. It has given us some really good figures and what makes you think about buying a diesel car today.

The Class C 220D has made us a average consumption of 5,5 l/100km in the 1100km we did with it, some very good numbers. In highway at legal speeds we have been able to do a whopping 4,7 l / 100kmOf course, this also depends on the orography of the terrain. In general, the consumption is the one mentioned at the beginning, so a ten for the C-Class.

Conclusions Mercedes Class C 220D

Finally, We are going to comment on what we think of this Class C after the test carried out this week. Offers a good level of qualities and ride comfort, excellent mechanics and very good quality/price ratio.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is It has not finished convincing me, it is the free space for the head in the rear seats. I know that I am a very tall person but I found it curious that in this car I was colliding with my head. Another aspect is the loading mouth of the trunk, since we will have it difficult to put large objects.

El Mercedes C-Class starts from €47.214 in its access mechanics, but the unit we tested today which is the 220D with practically all the extras the price goes up to 62.120€
