It was the year 1993 when Ford proposed a replacement for the legendary Sierra. The Ford Mondeo It arrived that year to replace its predecessor, and it did so from the outset as a global product. Hence its name. Mondeo derives from the Latin world, which means world. A saloon that little by little has suffered the effects of the SUV fashion.

And it is that since the crossovers have arrived on the market, many sedans have been losing prominence, as is the case with the Mondeo. Although the oval brand has been updating it every few years, currently its sales are mainly focused on taxi or VTC services. Few are the Mondeo that end up in the hands of individuals despite having a good price-product ratio.

The last of the generations, the fifth, was presented in 2014. A discreet restyling was presented in 2019, and since then there have been no changes. The improvements introduced focused on small aesthetic changes, on a better equipment load, and finally on the introduction of new, more efficient mechanics.

Technical characteristics of the Ford Mondeo

Ford Mondeo Sedan - Ford Mondeo Sportbreak 2020

The Ford Mondeo is a D-segment sedan, one of the most popular and chameleon-like formats on the market. The American model is a good example of that versatility. It is marketed in three different bodies: four and five doors in addition to a family variant called Sportbreak. All of them share a global platform called CD4, the same that we can see in other models such as the Ford Edge or Ford Galaxy.

The conventional sedan body, despite having a different number of doors, has measurements that lead us to the 4,87 meters long, 1,85 meters wide and 1,48 meters high. It is curious that the Sportbreak version is slightly shorter, staying at 4,86 meters long. All three have the same battle, 2,85 meters which translates into a large interior space approved for five passengers.

In terms of load capacity, the options vary depending on the bodywork selected. The four-door unit is exclusively hybrid, so its cargo volume is the smallest with just 330 liters minimum capacity. The Sportbreak option follows with a minimum trunk of 525 liters, and curiously the most capable of all is the five-door Mondeo thanks to its 550 liters minimum capacity.

Mechanical range and Ford Mondeo gearboxes

With the arrival of the 2019 restyling, new efficient mechanics were introduced and goodbye to gasoline engines was said. For this reason the range of the Ford Mondeo is limited and without too much fanfare. Low and mid-range powers that strive to reduce consumption and emissions. The fleet consists of three diesel variants and a conventional hybrid option which will be exclusively associated with the four-door body and the Sportbreak.

With the 2019 model, downsizing was also said goodbye. Since then the diesel Mondeo uses a single engine. It is a turbocharged block of four cylinders and two liters. Is TDCi mechanics can offer three power levels: 120, 150 and 190 horsepower. Associated with the block, and in certain circumstances, we can find a six-speed manual gearbox, or an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

As to conventional hybridIt has a four-cylinder, two-liter gasoline engine that develops 140 horsepower. Added to it is an electric motor, a 1,4 kWh capacity battery and a CVT-type automatic gearbox. The final power is 186 horses with an electric range of two kilometers. The Mondeo usually sends all the power of the engine to the front wheels, although there is also the possibility of mounting an AWD scheme.

Equipment of the Ford Mondeo

Ford Fusion facelift Mondeo

Although Ford is a generalist brand, it takes very good care of the interior environment of its most representative models. The Mondeo has evolved to display a well-presented cabin, with optimal qualities and a high feeling of comfort. Thanks to the latest facelift, it has been able to enjoy a greater technological load, however, the years are beginning to weigh on it.

The range of Ford Mondeo equipment is structured in five finishes: Trend, Titanium, Titanium HEV, ST-Line and Vignale. Not all of these finishes are available on all bodies and mechanics. Depending on the selected option we have certain limitations. What is clear is that the Vignale finish is the top of the range, with more exclusive materials and a more elegant exterior appearance.

As far as pure equipment is concerned, the Mondeo has advanced systems, although it falters in other sections such as the assistance elements for driving. Despite this, it can have LED headlights, digital instrument panel, rear camera, browser, dual-zone climate control, SYNC3 multimedia system with a screen of up to nine inches, connectivity for mobile devices, keyless entry and start, and much more.

Ford Mondeo according to Euro NCAP

As a good sedan worth its salt, safety is an important aspect. In 2019 Euro NCAP tested the protection levels of the renewed Mondeo. After undergoing the harsh crash tests, the final result is obtaining the highest possible grade; five stars. The rating for adult passenger protection is excellent, 96 out of 100, and the protection for child passengers is also notable, 87 out of 100. Somewhat less positive are the values for pedestrian and driver assistant protection, with scores of 70 and 73. over 100, respectively.

The Ford Mondeo of Km 0 and second hand

Although the current sales of the Mondeo are not going through their best moment, we are talking about one of the longest-lived and most commercial sedans in the Spanish market. It has five generations behind them, and that leaves us with second-hand and second-hand markets well stocked with units for sale. The percentage of depreciation is situated in average values of the segment, although slightly higher than that of other rivals.

The most affordable units are the first and second generation. Their reputation for durability and resistance makes them accumulate high mileage. Their prices can start from amounts close to 500 euros. If we opt for the Km 0 market we find 2019 models with a multitude of offers that vary depending on the bodywork, mechanics and equipment level. Their prices are lower than those in the catalog, so they are very tempting.
