There is no end in sight. SUVs manage to surprise us once again with their innumerable shapes and infinite curves. SUVs have changed the entire world automobile paradigm, and when you think that new figures cannot emerge, models like the volkswagen taigo to expose us. The latest and most model member of the German family jacket.

After several years of tuning and development, the Taigo makes an appearance in the summer of 2021. However, the Volkswagen Nivus has been on sale for some time in other markets such as the Brazilian. Both are the same product, but in the case of the Taigo the appropriate changes have been made to meet the demands of the European market, the toughest market in terms of quality.

There is no valid background on the Volkswagen Taigo. Although it is not the first B-SUV coupé that the German brand presents to the market, the first was the successful Volkswagen T ROC, yes, it is the first time that we see it in a smaller format than this, because we must not forget that the Taigo is considered to be the coupé variant of the small Volkswagen T-Cross, although there are aesthetic differences between the two.

Technical characteristics of the Volkswagen Taigo

When manufacturing new models, brands take advantage of bases and knowledge already used to reduce the cost and simplify the production process. Under the sporty body of the Volkswagen Taigo hides the Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 platform. It is the same one used by his brother Volkswagen T-Cross, in addition to other models of the conglomerate, such as the Volkswagen Polo or Audi A1.

Due to its size, we are talking about one of the company's smallest models. Although its starting point is the T-Cross, the Taigo is slightly larger thanks to its differentiated shapes. Despite this, it is still located in the B-SUV segment. Externally it reaches 4,27 meters long, 1,76 meters wide and 1,49 meters high.. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,57 meters. A battle that allows you to offer an interior space for five passengers.

Three of them are located in the second row of seats somewhat narrow in legroom and shoulder room. Three adults will travel very narrow, so it is advisable to leave the central square for a child. With two child seats, the central position is completely eliminated. Regarding its load capacity, the Volkswagen Taigo announces a volume of at least 440 liters. An excellent volume considering the rest of the segment.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Volkswagen Taigo

When it comes to machining the Taigo, Volkswagen has thrown down the gauntlet to the smallest range of engines in the conglomerate. The offer is based exclusively on gasoline thermal units without any type of electrification. The B-SUV segment is clearly a gasoline and low-power segment. In this case, the portfolio is made up of two units with three cylinders and one with four.

For the moment, the announced range starts with the Taigo 1.0 TSI. A 1-liter three-cylinder block that delivers 95 horsepower and that is always associated with a five-speed manual transmission that sends all the power to the front axle, like the rest of the family since there are no four-wheel drive solutions present. That same block feeds a Taigo 1.0 TSI with 110 hp. A more powerful version that joins a six-speed manual transmission or, optionally, a seven-speed DSG.

The power cap is represented by the well-known 1.5-liter four-cylinder block with partial cylinder disconnection. The Taigo 1.5 TSI offers 150 horsepower. In this case, it is always linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It is unknown if more mechanical variants will arrive in the future, although we highly doubt it since Volkswagen is clearly turning to electrified technology.

Equipment of the Volkswagen Taigo

From the inside out, the small SUV coupé makes it clear that it is aimed at a young audience and a market where every euro counts. The passenger compartment of the Volkswagen Taigo is made almost entirely of plastic. Hard plastic with a good touch that fails to raise the feeling of perceived quality. Of course, the atmosphere makes up for it thanks to one of the most complete equipment in its category.

As for the offer of finishes and equipment, as is usual in Wolfsburg, a wide range of possibilities is offered that allows each client to obtain their model adjusted to their particular tastes and needs. The range is distributed in several finishes, From lowest to highest endowment we find: Life and R-Line. To them must be added two optional packages: Black Style and Roof Pack. In each of them not only the equipment changes, but also the physical appearance of the exterior and interior.

As far as equipment is concerned, the MQB A0 platform allows the integration of a wide range of systems and technologies. Thanks to this, the Volkswagen Taigo is one of the most complete models in the category.. Elements such as: LED matrix headlights, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with 8-inch touch panel, browser, air conditioning, connectivity for smartphones, voice control and a complete safety equipment and driving assistants stand out.

Volkswagen Taigo rivals

It could be said, without fear of being wrong, that the natural enemies of the Taigo are the same as those of its brother T-Cross since both belong to the B-SUV segment. Nevertheless, if we focus more on the coupé bodies, we could highlight the almost lack of direct enemies of the German. The list is much shorter since most manufacturers go for more traditional formats. That leaves us with the rivals of the Volkswagen Taigo are: Citroen C3-Aircross, SEAT Arona, KIA Sonic, Hyundai Kona, Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Nissan Juke, Ford Puma y Opel Mokka, among others. They are all similar in size, features and price, but the Taigo is virtually unique in coupe silhouette and line.
