Ford launched to the market en 1997 a B-segment model with a three-door coupe design, a sporty appearance and above all new for the time. However, it was in 2019 when the American brand decided to recover that iconic model called Ford Puma but giving it a 180 degree turn. Nowadays It's a B-segment SUV. that slightly maintains details in the design that remind it of its ancestor. It offers mechanics of 125, 155 and 200 CV, the latter being the most aspirational.
In the test today we will be with him Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV 155 hp, automatic gearbox and ST Line X finish. It is a micro-hybridized engine that gives it the DGT ECO sticker and has more than decent power for day to day use. I advance prices, and it is that the Puma starts at €25.769 in its access version.
Attractive and sporty design
If we talk about Ford Cougar design, we can say that share a lot of details esthetics with his older brother Kuga. It has a beautiful, sporty appearance and above all differential compared to its direct competitors.
In the front part, highlights a full LED optical group with a very attractive light signature, a generous front grille with gloss black trim, a small front lip to give it a more sporty look and air intakes on the sides that are fully functional.
continuing towards the side, highlight some 19 inch rims with 225/40 measurement, marked wheel arches in body color and specific skirts for this finish in the lower area of the doors with piano black inserts.
ending with behind, we can see an attractive spoiler that gives it a more aggressive and sporty look, a rear light group that unfortunately is not full LED, the anagram of the "Puma" model, a specific molding with the name of the mechanics and a bumper that reveals a kind of diffuser in body color in which a real exhaust outlet is located.
Simple Ford-style interior
Si we continue towards the interior of the Puma, we can appreciate that it has a very simple design and that once again, it reminds us a lot of the Kuga. Some qualities stand out that are mainly composed of hard and soft plastics in addition to certain details in the dashboard area in simile carbon fiber. The adjustments are good and it is difficult to find something that creaks to the touch.
On technological section, we find a screen for the 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster that varies its design according to the driving mode we choose. The screen for the infotainment system is 8 inches and has the Ford Sync 3 version. Offers integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as long as we connect it by cable.
The steering wheel, which has a very good touch, in the automatic versions it mounts some small cams so that if we do a more dynamic driving, we can squeeze the Puma. On the other hand we have in the left area the settings for the cruise control and in the right area to control the multimedia system.
Something that It has not convinced me too much, it is that we only have one USB in the whole car and a 12 volt cigarette lighter socket. I think that having put one more USB type socket would not have been bad at all.
Limited habitability for tall people
starting to talk about the habitability that we can find in the Ford Puma, the front seats are spacious and comfortable enough, even for people as tall as me. Like I always say, I'm 1,94 meters tall and in cars of this segment it is difficult to be comfortable when driving. The seats, which are made of fabric and synthetic leather, have a soft padding and grip very well as well as having a massage function, although it is very basic.
Si we go to the rear seats is where the "problems" come. With the driver's seat adjusted to my height, practically I don't fit in the second row of seats. My knees are pressed against the seat and there's zero headroom as I'm bumping into the ceiling. It should be mentioned that this will only happen to people who are taller than 1,85 meters. The central square does not have armrests, so it is quite comfortable to go on it.
Spacious trunk with extra space bonus
passing towards the Ford Puma boot areaIt has quite a useful space. cube 401 liter capacity, about 60 liters less than in the versions without microhybridization. The loading mouth is very good and wide to put large objects. The only thing that has not convinced me too much is the tray is made of canvas, which is not very robust.
La great advantage is that we have a double bottom that offers up to 80 liters more, although in our case it was mostly occupied by the spare wheel and the subwoofer.
Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV 155 hp engine
The mechanics of this Ford Puma is characterized by being a 1.0-liter turbo petrol with 155 hp and 220 Nm of torque added to a small 48V battery thus giving it the DGT ECO sticker. It is attached to one 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox which is very smooth and fast. This same engine block is used for the 125 hp versions.
The figure of the 0 to 100 of this Puma is in 9 seconds along with a top speed of 200 km/h. The approved average consumption is 5,6 l/100km, a figure that is somewhat far from what we have been able to achieve during the test we have carried out.
At the wheel of the Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV 155 CV
Already behind the wheel with the Puma, we can say that it is a model with a slightly sporty set-up. It shows that we are close to the most aspirational version of the Puma, the ST. .
The Ford Cougar with this mechanics of 155 hp it even becomes fun at certain times. Its weight is 1280 kg and lets you feel surprising agility in a section of curves. The engine responds with joy, although it is true that in the last zone of the rev counter it runs out of much energy.
La automatic gearbox is very smooth and practically the gear changes are negligible. The only time you can notice it more is when you start from a standstill.
Suspension, steering and soundproofing
La suspension I have noticed firm but comfortable. It did not cause the vehicle to rock excessively on curves, but then on the highway or in the city it did not become uncomfortable. It filtered everything quite well as a general rule.
About address, it is appreciated that it is very assisted and does not report very accurately what is happening under the front axle, in addition to being very soft. Yes it is true that if we put the sports mode, the latter changes but in the end it still does not inform us much.
With regards to soundproofing, in general it is quite good and we hardly hear anything. The mirrors are very small, so the main aerodynamic noise that gets into the cabin is considerably reduced.
Consumption Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV 155 CV
Si We are talking about the consumption of this Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV of 155 CV, I must say that they are a bit high. During the entire week of testing that we have been with him, the average consumption has been around 7,8 l/100km. It is a high consumption for a model of these characteristics. Even making only an urban use, the average consumption was around 7,5 l/100km as well as on the road, which was in the same average.
Conclusions Ford Puma 1.0 MHEV 155 CV
To finish with the test of the Ford Puma, I am going to comment on the conclusions that I have been able to draw from it after the whole week of testing.
As I liked the most it's the agility it offers. Its weight and power have meant that in certain situations I have had a great time, especially on mountain roads. The design with so much personality and sportiness is another of the most characteristic details and the space found in the trunk is very good for a model in this segment.
As I liked the least is that it seems a bit excessive to me that in a model this segment has made an average consumption of 7,8 l/100km throughout the test and that the habitability for tall people in the second row of seats is very, very fair.
In general it is a Very interesting car that perfectly fulfills its function. It is a recommended purchase if we are looking for a more youthful design.
