A legend among legends. Muscle cars are ordinary cars in the United States, but not so much in our market. The Ford Mustang is, without a doubt, the most famous among them all. a sports car Made in USA that for the first time is marketed in European territory officially. A milestone that had not occurred in its almost 60 years of history.

The birth of the Ford Mustang is one of those stories known by every good lover of four wheels. Presented in 1964, it was the forerunner of the Pony Car, sports of apparent design and correct performance. After his success, many tried to remove him from the throne, but none have been able to do so, although some others have positioned themselves very close, such as the Chevrolet Camaro.

Over the years and generations, the concept of the Pony Car has been diluted and today we speak of the Mustang as a high-performance sports car. For the first time in its history it becomes a global product, being marketed by Ford outside the national territory. The current generation, the sixth, is presented in 2015, although it undergoes an update in early 2018.

Technical characteristics of the Ford Mustang

The jump to global product implied a series of consequences. The Ford Mustang left behind a classic rigid rear axle setup to be supported by a better, and more modern, multi-link independent suspension, subject to a latest generation chassis that is more evolved and better prepared for a more balanced driving depending on the treatment it receives.

The platform, called D2C, provides some measures that have made it grow considerably with respect to the original model. Despite this, it is located within segment D. 4,79 meters long, 1,92 meters wide and 1,39 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,72 meters. A generous wheelbase that allows it to offer an approved passenger compartment for a maximum of two passengers in the 2+2 position.

Despite the good wheelbase, the Ford Mustang does not offer comfortable space in the rear seats. Its trunk is not generous either, 408 liters of capacity. It is marketed in two bodies; hardtop coupe and softtop convertible. The latter offers the same measurements except for the trunk, where it shows a capacity of 332 liters.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Ford Mustang

In its origin, the sixth generation of the Ford Mustang landed in Europe with two mechanical versions. The access unit, called 2.3 Ecoboost, showed lower performance but managed to meet the standards and the demanding European emission regulations. Today that option has disappeared from the range, leaving room only for large displacement and high power engines.

No electrified units in sight, except for the Ford Mustang Mach E, The Mustang Fastback bets everything on gasoline. The range has two versions, both use the same engine that is capable of presenting two different powers through slight electronic adjustments. It's about a V8 of 5.038 cubic centimeters that in the least of the cases develops 450 horses at 7.000 revolutions and 529 Nm of torque at 4.600 engine revolutions.

In its most powerful configuration the 8 V5.0 block delivers 460 horsepower at 7.250 revolutions and 529 Nm of torque at 4.600 revolutions. All versions send power to the rear axle. Management is derived from a six-speed manual gearbox or a 10-speed automatic. At its maximum expression of sportiness, the Ford Mustang is capable of reaching a top speed of 263 kilometers per hour with acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers in just 4,6 .XNUMX seconds.

Equipment of the Ford Mustang

One of the drawbacks of the Ford Mustang compared to European models is the quality of its finishes. although for the sixth generation the american house has implemented new materials and better adjustments, the difference with respect to similar European models is considerable since most of them belong to the premium segment. Despite this, we speak of a feeling of good perceived quality.

For the particular case of the Mustang, Ford does not offer its classic equipment levels. In this case, the range is divided into two levels: GT and Mach 1. Each offers very similar equipment, but the Mach 1 version has a different style. In addition, this finish is always associated with the most powerful mechanical variant, while the GT always offers the 450 horsepower option.

As far as equipment is concerned the Ford Mustang offers a wide variety of systems, many of them updated in the restyling of 2018. There are many elements to highlight such as: LED headlights, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, digital instrument panel with 12-inch screen, Recaro sports seats, multimedia system with screen of 8 inches, connectivity for mobile devices and a complete catalog of driving assistants.

The Ford Mustang according to Euro NCAP

The Ford Mustang is the only muscle car which is sold in Spain (and Europe) massively. For this reason it has to undergo Euro NCAP crash tests. The current generation was tested in the first months of 2017, and the score obtained was 3 stars. The percentages that give this grade are the following: 72% protection for adult occupants and 32% protection for child occupants. In the event of a pedestrian being run over, the protection achieved is 78% and in the section on driving aids, the grade is determined by 61%.

The Ford Mustang of Km 0 and second hand

Until the current generation of the Ford Mustang arrived in Europe, the only way to get hold of a unit was to bring it from the United States. This operation, as a general rule, was expensive and laborious, making the price of this model on the second-hand market uneconomical. Also, the Ford Mustang is listed as a mythical car, so its depreciation is 25%. More and more units are becoming available, with the latest generation leading the way.

The lack of units from previous generations means that its price is revalued. If we take a look at the second-hand channel we see how the most affordable units correspond to the fifth generation, with approximate starting prices of 15 euros. The Km 0 market is much more limited, just a handful of models where the prices hardly present a great difference with respect to the factory rates.

Ford Mustang rivals

The fair thing when looking at the closest rivals to the Ford Mustang would be to mention the many similar models we can find overseas. But none of them reaches our market officially, so the rivals that are worth mentioning are: Mercedes C-Class Coupe, BMW Serie 4, Audi A5, Toyota Supra, Jaguar F-Type y Porsche 911. All of them illustrious and recognized figures, although the American stands out for its lower cost and a V8 engine of the American school. However, he penalizes in quality of finishes and technical precision.
